Three steps, no equipment at all

The three steps Bank Indonesia teaches, and the physical reason behind each. The order is arranged to need no equipment at all: eyes, then fingers, then a window.

If you have a Rp100,000 note (TE 2022) in hand, this is exactly what you would find at this step — not the general rule, but that one denomination, start to finish.

  1. Step one

    Dilihat — look

    Hold the note in ordinary light and tilt it slowly. Watch for areas whose colour moves with your angle.

    Move the control below to change the viewing angle. The colour shifts because the angle changed, not because the ink did.

    The colour the eye sees is how the brain reads a wavelength of light — red is a long wavelength, blue a short one. This computes thin-film interference for three such wavelengths, so the colour genuinely follows your viewing angle, not a rotated picture. The layer thickness is chosen to make the effect legible on a screen — it is not a copy of any note’s ink.

    • Microtext. Microtext legible only with the help of a magnifier. Unaided, it reads as an ordinary fine rule.[1]
    • Colour-shifting ink. A regional flower containing the Bank Indonesia logo, which changes colour and shows a dynamic movement effect when viewed from a different angle.[2]

  2. Step two

    Diraba — feel

    Run a fingertip over the main image, the numerals, and the edges of the sheet. You are looking for surfaces that feel rough and raised.

    Sweep the light

    A screen cannot convey touch, but it can show the other consequence of raised printing: ink standing above the surface catches light from a low angle and shadows the far side. Move the light around.

    The surface here is a run of plain ridges, not the engraving on any note. It shows how relief catches light — it is not a substitute for feeling it. For that, still take out a note.

    • Raised printing (intaglio). Printing that feels rough to the touch, including on the hero portrait and the denomination numerals.[3]
    • Kode tuna netra — the blind code. A blind code, present as a tactile effect. This note carries 1 pair(s) of lines on each side.[4][5]

  3. Step three

    Diterawang — hold to light

    Lift the note towards the light. What appears, appears because light passes through the material rather than bouncing off it.

    Move the light source behind the sheet. Brightness follows thickness: the more material the light crossed, the less of it reaches your eye.

    The shape here is deliberately abstract — a lens and an ornament ring — not a portrait and not the watermark of any note. What is demonstrated is the relationship: brightness follows thickness.

    • Watermark & electrotype. The regulation for this note states a watermark portrait of Dr. (H.C.) Ir. Soekarno dan Dr. (H.C.) Drs. Mohammad Hatta, together with an electrotype. Hold the note to the light to see both.[6][7]
    • Security thread. The regulation states a woven security thread on this note. Held to the light, it reads as one continuous line.[8]
    • Rectoverso (gambar saling isi). A rectoverso of the Bank Indonesia logo, which can be seen whole when the note is held up to the light.[9]

  4. Beyond the three

    The fourth channel

    Features needing a lamp or a machine. Useful, but outside 3D precisely because they need equipment.

    Some features sit outside 3D because they need equipment: elements visible only under ultraviolet light, and features read by counting machines. Bank Indonesia built 3D from checks anyone can make, anywhere, carrying nothing.

    A screen emits no ultraviolet. What is shown here is a picture of the result, and cannot stand in for a real UV lamp.

    • UV-visible elements. Printing that fluoresces in several colours when viewed under ultraviolet light.[10]

After the three steps

This site draws no conclusion about any particular note, and never will. If something troubles you, take the note to a bank or to a Bank Indonesia office. The authority to determine whether Rupiah is genuine rests with Bank Indonesia.

One step cannot be done here

Diraba is a check made with a fingertip. A screen has no texture; a phone’s vibration does not imitate raised printing, and an animation would only teach the wrong thing. This site describes what to feel for, and then stops.
